Google Webmaster Tools

June 9, 2008 - present

Currently I work as the Tech Lead of the Webmaster Tools backend team at Google. Webmaster Tools is a web application for webmasters, which gives website owners a wealth of information about their sites. For example, if Googlebot found any errors when crawling their site, or which keywords show the website in their search results.

Initially I worked in the GData API, an interface to get all the data of Webmaster Tools programatically. There are some blog posts about my work in the official Webmaster Central blog:

Recently I implemented also a couple of features that were very well received, the Labs option and Fetch as Googlebot. Labs gives engineers the option of developing and releasing a feature very fast. The post in the Webmaster Central blog explains in what it consists. There was another post about it in the official Google blog from Marissa Meyer. Fetch as Googlebot is a new feature that allows webmasters to see their site exactly as Googlebot sees it. This is extremely useful for example to detect when a site has been hacked.

Finally, if you have any kind of problem with Webmaster Tools, Googlebot or search results from Google, please check out the Webmaster Help forum, it is your best bet to get an authoritative response from Google engineers and power users.

Microsoft Live Search

October 2, 2006 - May 23, 2008

I worked at Microsoft for about a year an a half. I was a developer in the Dynamic Ranking team of Live Search (currently Bing). I developed algorithms to improve the relevance of search results.

My work consisted both in writing software and performing experiments. Ranking, as many other problems in machine learning has a heavy component of experimentation. A good introduction of how to do ranking using gradient descent can be found here.

Dyriad

November 1, 2004 - June 2, 2005

After finishing my Bs.C in Computer Science I started an IT consulting company in Valladolid, Spain. It didn't work quite well, as I didn't have any professional experience then. It was a valuable experience though.
